For Positano, ferries from Salerno typically take about 1h–1h 30m by ferry, depending on the operator and sea conditions, giving you direct access without the stress of coastal traffic.

From Paestum train station, the archaeological site is located at approximately 30 minutes walking distance. Alternatively, it is possible to take a taxi from the station for a quicker and more comfortable transfer.

Paestum’s exceptionally well-preserved Doric temples and adjacent museum make for a rich cultural visit near the sea.

Extra tip: Lunch at a nearby buffalo mozzarella farm. Please note that most farms are located at about 30 minutes walking distance from the archaeological site, making it an easy extension of your visit.

Herculaneum (Ercolano): An Intimate Archaeological Experience

The archaeological site at Herculaneum (Ercolano) is also reachable from Salerno. By rail, the journey to Ercolano/Portici-Ercolano typically takes around ~60–70 minutes by train, with some direct regional trains available.

Herculaneum is smaller than Pompeii but offers a more detailed, intimate glimpse into Roman life, with multi-story structures and preserved interior elements still visible.

Sorrento: Gateway to the Coast

Sorrento is another fine day-trip from Salerno. By car the journey along the coast typically takes about ~55–60 minutes. By public transport, routes combining train and local services can take ~2h+ depending on connections.

The Royal Palace of Caserta (Reggia di Caserta)

The palace is famous for its grand Baroque architecture, richly decorated interiors, and its vast formal gardens with fountains and water features inspired by Versailles.
